About Central Wisconsin Mutual Insurance Company

Central Wisconsin Mutual Insurance Company was formed as the result of a merger between Flyway Mutual Insurance Company and South Central Mutual Insurance Company on January 1, 2021. We are confident that our combined efforts will allow us to provide even better insurance products and service to our policyholders.

Town Mutuals were born out of necessity. In the mid to late 1800’s, farmers could not afford to purchase property insurance on their residence, personal property and outbuildings due to the high premiums charged. Stock insurance companies felt that if a farm fire started, it would most likely be a total loss due to the time it took the fire department to arrive on scene. It was for this reason they were reluctant to insure farm property.

To form a company, 25 farmers were needed to insure each other’s losses. During this period many local insurance companies started up throughout Wisconsin. At one time there were over 300 companies. They were called Town Mutuals. They only insured for fire coverage. The idea of neighbor insuring neighbor was born. The policyholders were & are the owners of the company.

These community founded companies were organized and continue to operate under the supervision of a Board of Directors elected by the company policyholders. Officers often know the policyholders personally as they spend their everyday lives among the policyholders. They are friends and neighbors. They attend the same churches, their children attend the same schools, their problems are similar, and their interests are the same.

History of Central Wisconsin Mutual Insurance Company

Our Company was formed in Waupun on March 13, 1874 under the original title of Waupun Farmer’s Mutual Insurance Company. On June 12, 1874 a meeting was held to discuss applications for fire coverage totaling in excess of one hundred thousand dollars. A motion was made and carried to begin business that date. Fond du Lac, Dodge, & Green Lake were the first counties in which the company wrote business.

The company wrote fire insurance until 1960 when extended coverage was added. It wasn’t until May 14, 1969 that the board gave authority to write liability. This was the start of the package policy, offering both liability and property protection.

In 1971, Waupun Farmers Mutual Insurance Company and Ripon Town Mutual Insurance Company met. It was decided that Ripon Town Mutual would merge with Waupun Farmers Mutual. The merger was successfully completed in 1972 and the company was renamed Waupun-Ripon Mutual Insurance Company.

A November 1974 meeting between Waupun-Ripon Mutual and Town of Trenton Mutual resulted in yet another merger. The Company became known as Waupun-Ripon-Trenton Mutual Insurance Company.

In March of 1983, the name of the Corporation was changed to Flyway Mutual Insurance Company, as it is known today.

In 1987, Flyway Mutual Insurance Company and Beaver Dam-Woodland-Burnett Mutual Insurance merged bringing on board several new agents as well as board members.

On March 21, 2012, at the Annual Meeting, Flyway Mutual Insurance Company members voted in favor of a merger with Rosendale Mutual Insurance Company effective April 1, 2012.

December 1, 2020 The company name was changed to Central Wisconsin Mutual Insurance Company

Most Recently, January 1, 2021, South Central Mutual Insurance Company merged with Central Wisconsin Mutual Insurance Company. South Central Mutual was established in 1874 as Randolph & Scott Town Mutual. From this small beginning the company has steadily grown. In 1977 Westford Mutual merged into Randolph & Scott Town Mutual and the name was changed to Randolph, Scott, Westford Mutual. On January 1, 1995 Manchester, Kingston & Marquette Mutual merged with Randolph, Scott, Westford Mutual and a new name was chosen, the name being South Central Mutual Insurance Company.
